Jagityala, June 26 (Namaste Telangana): Four and a half decades of history.. Unsurpassed glory in the field of agricultural research.. Creation of 17 types of seeds in a single paddy in three and a half decades.. Jagityala research station has got the honor of changing the course of rice cultivation in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The agricultural research station started in 1980 on the outskirts of Polasa village near Jagityala has recorded revolutionary results in its forty five years of existence. Many seeds and varieties have been created suitable for the climate here and records have been set.
Today, the farmers and scientists of North Telangana are expressing their displeasure over the absence of a single seed from the Jagityala research station among the seven varieties announced by the state government as an incentive for rice bonus and zero wrapping of the fines created by the Jagityala research station. On what basis were the seven types of Sanna selected? Has the government considered the benefits and losses of those seeds..or has it selected the seeds to benefit the private companies, especially the seed companies from the Andhra region, and to cause trouble to the farmers of Telangana..? Farmers and scientists express their doubts.
Suitable for Telangana climate
A total of 17 types of rice seeds have been developed in relation to Doddu and Sannaraka at the Jagityala research site. Seven of them belong to Sanna and ten to Doddu types. Thin rice seeds of JGL-29545, JGL-33124, JGL-27456, JGL-384, JGL-1798, JG3844, JGL-3328 varieties were developed and provided to the farmers. These are of the highest quality and excellence. Suitable for Telangana climate. Scientists and farmers say that it is resistant to pests and gives high yields. All have a cropping period of 125 days. The crop will be harvested within four months. 25 to 28 quintals of grain yield per acre is likely. It is stated that the farmers who have grown these at the field level for several years are achieving high yields.
Sarkar’s incentive is only for long-term varieties
A month and a half ago, the Revanth Sarkar announced that only 7 types of rice seeds would get bonus. BPT-5204, Telangana Sona (RNR-15048), HMT Sona, Jai Sriram, KNM-1638, KNM-7715, WGL-44 varieties have been announced. The first of them, BPT-5204 rice seed, was produced at the Bapatla Research Center in Andhra Pradesh forty years ago. It is recognized as a long term (150 days) crop. Not found suitable for Telangana climate. There is a high risk of infection with onion, gnats, fireflies and dry rot.
The yield is between 20 to 22 quintals per acre. It is stated that Jaishreram and HMT Sona, which were created in Maharashtra, also have high pests and are not fully suitable for the soil here. All three varieties have a cropping period of five months. Telangana Sona RNR-15048, KNM-1638, KNM-7715 varieties have a cropping period of 125 days and are also said to be resistant to onion blight and fire blight.
WGL-44 type of rice seed is said to be resistant to onion borer and fire blight and this is also a long term crop of 150 days. It is said that in order to cultivate the WGL-44 variety of rice, it should be planted from the last week of May to June 10, otherwise there will be difficulties in cultivating the seed of that variety.
Are there many conspiracies in Sarkar’s decision?
Suspicions are being expressed that there is a strategy to eliminate the conditions of cultivation of three crops per year after suggesting to cultivate long-term varieties like BPT, WGL, HMT Sona and Jai Sriram. Among these four types of seeds are low yielding. As a result, the grain that the farmer brings for sale is likely to decrease by up to thirty percent. Opinions are being expressed that this will reduce the burden of purchase on the government.
BPT, Jaishreram and HMT Sona varieties are likely to be sold by farmers in the open market. Scientists think that the government may come out of the issue of rice purchase. BPT variety seed created in Andhra region, Jaishreram, HMT Sona seeds are marketed by private companies of Andhra region.
Criticisms are pouring in that the prominent people of the Sarkar are greedy with the private seed companies of Andhra region. In many districts of Telangana, farmers use their own seeds after cleaning them. As the government has allowed only seven types of seeds, the farmers here have purified themselves.
North Telangana public representatives with their eyes closed
Criticisms are pouring in that the public representatives of North Telangana turned a blind eye when the government announced the promotion of seven types of rice seeds. Farmers are severely criticizing the fact that not a single public representative asked why the rice seeds created according to the climate of Telangana in the research station in North Telangana are not being subsidized and why they are not in the incentive list. It is expressed that the incompetence and lack of understanding of the representatives of the public is overwhelming the Telangana peasantry.
