Hyderabad July 15 (Namaste Telangana): The High Court has ruled that even if twins are born in the first birth, maternity leave must be granted in the second birth. It has been clarified that denial of maternity leave for second birth on the ground that twins were born in the first birth and two children are alive is invalid and this is contrary to Article 21 of the Constitution.

According to the verdict, 180 days maternity leave should be granted for the second delivery even if two children are born in the first delivery. Jadi Swaruparani, a junior lecturer working at Bellampally SC Gurukula Society of Manchiryala district, filed a petition challenging the denial of maternity leave due to having twins in the first delivery.

Justice K Sarath took up the investigation. After hearing the arguments of both sides, the judge recalled that the Supreme Court had decided that maternity leave rules should be viewed from a welfare perspective and to protect the rights of women and should not be implemented mechanically.
