Left leader wins with huge majority
Dublin: Catherine Connolly has been elected as the President of Ireland. Elections were held on Friday and counting of votes was done on Saturday. Connolly, the left-wing candidate, won a clear majority over his opponent Humphreys in this election. Connolly, who contested as an independent candidate, was supported by the main left-wing parties, the Green Party and Sinn Féin. Right-wing parties Fine Gael and Fianna conceded defeat. In the first round of counting, Connolly received 64.7% of the vote in the Cork South and Central constituency, compared to 28.2% for challenger Heather Humphreys and 7.1% for another candidate, Jim Gavin, electoral officials said. She has shown superiority in all constituencies across the country.. Connolly is a prominent lawyer. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2016. He also served as Deputy Speaker. He campaigned for the election by openly criticizing the corporate policies of the government. He reached out to the youth by mentioning things like education and employment. Leaders of the Social Democrat and Labor Party (SDLP) have congratulated Cllr Hannah as new president Connolly. She hoped that under Connolly’s leadership, the island would rise to prominence on the world stage and become a powerful nation. Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris described Connolly’s victory as a victory for Ireland. Invalid votes have increased significantly in this election. It is noteworthy that people cast a large number of invalid votes rejecting all the three candidates.
