Jonathan Tortoise: The news that the world’s oldest 193-year-old tortoise, Jonathan, has died has become a sensation on social media. However, the St Helena government dismissed the news as rumours. It has been posted on X giving clarity on this matter.
How did this mess start?
A false post on social media went viral on April Fools Day. “Jonathan has passed away,” posted an ex’s account under the name Joe Hollins, the veterinarian who took care of Jonathan. Ann Dillon, head of communications at St. Helena, noticed the confusion… and clarified that it was just a rumor and an April fools joke. With this, Jonathan’s fans held their breath.
What makes Jonathan special?
Tortoises that live on land usually live for over a hundred years. But Jonathan lived longer than that, 193 years. It is a privilege to be alive and healthy. With this, this turtle has won the Guinness Book of World Record as the oldest living creature in the world. In 1882, this tortoise was brought to St. Helena Island. It is about 50 years old when it comes to this island. According to these calculations, Jonathan may have been born in the early 19th century. Jonathan, who lived for so long, witnessed many historical events. It has witnessed world wars and political changes. Being in a peaceful environment is said to be the reason for living the longest.
