Health Tips: In today's fast paced life it has become a habit to refrigerate and reheat leftovers. However, health experts warn that reheating some foods can turn them toxic and cause serious health problems. Here are 5 important foods that should never be reheated.
1. Potatoes:
Potatoes are rich in starch. If they are left at room temperature for too long after cooking, the bacteria that causes 'botulism' can grow. When reheated, its nutrients become toxic and lead to stomach pain and vomiting.
2. Eggs:
Eggs, which are high in protein, should not be reheated after cooking or making an omelette. When exposed to high heat, the nitrogen in these oxidizes and becomes carcinogenic. It can also cause food poisoning.
3. Spinach:
Greens, especially spinach, are rich in nitrates. When these are reheated, the nitrates turn into dangerous carcinogens called 'nitrosamines'. It increases the risk of stomach and lung cancer.
4. Chicken:
Reheating the chicken for a second time damages the structure of the proteins in it. This causes digestive problems. When heated in a microwave, there is a risk that the bacteria will not be completely destroyed, but spread throughout the meat.
5. Rice:
If cooked rice is left outside, bacteria called 'Bacillus Sirius' grows rapidly. Reheating it does not kill the bacteria. The result is severe diarrhea and vomiting. Any meal is best cooked fresh.
To stay healthy, instead of heating old food and eating it, cook it in small quantities and eat it fresh every now and then. If storage is required, refrigerate within two hours of cooking and maintain at appropriate temperature.
